In what could be referred to as a touching moment when Mohammad Al-lami, an Iraqian told us his story (now and then) what it was and what it is now. Averagely ok in Iraq, Mohammad had to move away from his comfort zone in search of safety. A computer scientist by discipline and with unique qualities, Al-lami, prior to leaving Iraq was working as a scientist at the government office in his home country. As a scientist it is a very difficult situation. you cannot improve on yourself unless you have the permission he said. From F.A Brown.
Can we meet you?
I am Mohammad Allami from the Arabic speaking part of Iraq. 32 years old and a graduate computer science from the Al-Rafidain University College, Baghdad. Before2014 when It became very obvious that I have to get out of my home country, I was working with the Ministry of Justice. Before then, I had worked with with organizations and agencies including the USAID on Human Right project among others.
Why the journey?
I had a big dream back then in Iraq but the story or let say those lovely dreams and aspirations are shattered now. As a scientist your aim is to be the best and beat the best. But how now? I left my country and am glad I did even though it is not a sweet story to tell. I just thank God first because at least I still have my life.
What where your goals before travelling or you just decide to go?
I had always wanted to do my masters or go further higher in my studies. If by chance I have the opportunity my priority is to further my education and have a real solid foundation. But then how do I do that? I can only pray and hope on God.
Why the choice of your new home, Germany?
Well my decision to go to Germany was simply because I have been here before on a working visit from my home country. I love the serenity of the environment. It’s peaceful and lovely. When the problem began in my country Iraq it was simple for me to choose my choice of destination.
In a single word, how would you describe Germany?
Wonderful. It is really beautiful here even though for me as a migrant it is difficult and lonely.
Any significant cultural difference you have noticed?
So many differences in our culture and the German culture. German have so much respect for time. This act I love so much. also I see here that everyone have a bicycle and you can go everywhere with it including going to work or school. In Iraq only children ride bicycle. I love it when I see everyone both young and old riding. It’s fun. However, we have a culture in my country where we are always around friends and family but I don’t think that is part of German culture. This makes things a bit more difficult for foreigners like me.
What will you like to remember or see that you hold very dear?
I will be glad to see my family again and especially my lovely daughter. I saw her last one 16 months ago before I come to Germany.
How is your integration process? What is your status?

Mohammad Al-lami: Damals und jetzt
Es war ein als berührend zu bezeichnender Moment als Mohammad Al-lami, ein Iraker, uns seine Geschichte erzählte (damals und jetzt), wie es damals war und heute ist. Eigentlich ging es ihm ganz gut im Irak, aber dann musste Mohammad auf der Suche nach Sicherheit seine Komfortzone verlassen. Als ausgebildeter Computerfachmann arbeitete Al-lami in seinem Heimatland für eine Regierungsstelle als Informatiker, bevor er den Irak verließ. Für einen Wissenschaftler ist die Situation sehr schwierig, weil man sich ohne Erlaubnis beruflich nicht verbessern darf. Von F.A Brown.
Dürfen wir Dich kennenlernen?
Ich bin Mohammad Al-lami und komme aus dem arabisch sprechenden Teil des Iraks. Ich bin 32 Jahre alt und habe einen Hochschulabschluss der Al-Rafidain Universität, Baghdad, in Informatik. Vor 2014, als es sehr offensichtlich wurde, dass ich mein Heimatland verlassen muss, arbeitete ich für das Justizministerium. Davor habe ich mit unterschiedlichen Organisationen und Agenturen, unter anderem bei Menschenrechtsprojekten für USAID, gearbeitet.
Warum hast Du Dich auf den Weg gemacht?
Damals im Irak hatte ich einen großen Traum, aber die Geschichte, oder besser gesagt, diese wunderbaren Träume und Ambitionen sind jetzt zerstört. Als Wissenschaftler ist es Dein Ziel, der Beste zu sein und die Besten zu schlagen. Aber wie soll das jetzt möglich sein? Ich habe meine Heimat verlassen und bin froh, dass ich es getan habe, obwohl es keine schöne Geschichte zu erzählen gibt. Zunächst danke ich Gott, weil ich wenigstens noch lebe.
Was waren Deine Ziele bevor Du Dich auf den Weg gemacht hast, oder hast Du dich einfach nur entschieden zu gehen?
Ich wollte immer meinen Master machen und in meinem Studium weiterkommen. Falls ich die Möglichkeit bekommen sollte, wäre meine Priorität, mich weiterzubilden und mir ein solides Fundament zu schaffen. Aber wie soll ich das machen? Ich kann nur beten und auf Gott hoffen.
Warum hast Du Dir Deutschland als neue Heimat ausgesucht?
Also, meine Entscheidung, nach Deutschland zu gehen, war einfach, weil ich schon einmal für einen Arbeitsbesuch hier war. Ich liebe die Ruhe in meiner Umgebung, es ist friedlich und wunderbar. Als die Probleme in meiner Heimat Irak begangen, war es leicht für mich einen Zielort zu wählen.
Wie würdest Du Deutschland mit einem Wort beschreiben?
Wunderbar, es ist wirklich wunderschön hier, obwohl es für mich als Migrant schwierig und einsam ist.
Hast Du irgendwelche signifikanten kulturellen Unterschiede bemerkt?
Es gibt viele Unterschiede zwischen unserer und der deutschen Kultur. Deutsche haben viel Respekt vor der Zeit, das gefällt mir sehr. Auch fällt mir auf, dass hier jeder ein Fahrrad hat und, dass man überall damit hinfahren kann, einschließlich zur Schule oder Arbeit. Im Irak benutzen nur Kinder ein Fahrrad. Ich mag es, alle – alt und jung – fahren zu sehen. Es macht Spaß. Allerdings ist die Kultur in meiner Heimat sehr familienorientiert, wir sind immer von Familie und Freunden umgeben. Ich glaube nicht, dass dies ein Teil der deutschen Kultur ist. Das macht es ein wenig schwieriger für Fremde wie mich.
Woran erinnerst Du Dich gerne, was ist Dir wichtig?
Ich werde mich sehr freuen, wenn ich meine Familie wiedersehe, besonders meine wunderbare Tochter. Ich habe sie zuletzt vor 16 Monaten gesehen, bevor ich nach Deutschland kam.
Wie geht es mit Deinem Integrationsprozess voran? Was ist Dein Status?
Einfach nur warten und hoffen.
